Ninth inning Scottsdale homer sinks baseball, 5-4

MESA, AZ - A strong wind blew out to center field almost all game and ultimately may have cost Mesa, as Scottsdale used a two-run homer in the top of the ninth to take a 5-4 win Wednesday.

SCC's Jonathan Nunnally got one up in the wind to straight away center and saw it carry out to put his team up for the first time in the game.

Despite the loss MCC still has a chance to nail down the No. 2 seed in the up-coming Region I tournament. It holds a one-game margin over Phoenix, which defeated GateWay 1-0 in 11 innings Wednesday night. The wto will meet in a home-and-home series beginning Friday at PC. One Mesa win will look up the spot.

MCC got its own home run from Jordan Zimmerman (So., Mesa, AZ/Red Mountain H.S.) in the third, a three-run shot which put T-Birds ahead, 3-0. It came just after singles by Drew Lawrence (Fr., Anthem, AZ/Boulder Creek H.S.) and Alex Gudac (So., West Jordan, Utah/Juan Diego Catholic H.S.).

Mesa made it 4-2 in the fifth when Jordan Rose (So., Tremonton, Utah/Bear River H.S.) led off with a single. Courtesy runner Colton Corum (Fr., Winslow, AZ/Winslow H.S.) came around on an error, another Lawrence single and a single by Gudac.

Lawrence finished 2-5. Gudac and Rose were each 2-4.
