Big Pima innings sink baseball in doubleheader loss

MESA, AZ - Pima scored seven runs in the fourth inning of game one and four in the eighth of game two and handed Mesa a pair of losses Saturday, 9-5 and 6-4.

The losses drop MCC (34-12, 21-11) two games behind Paradise Valley, which swept GateWay this weekend, in the race for the top spot in Division II of the ACCAC.

In the opener, the Aztecs (23-20, 16-16) got a run in the first on a sacrifice fly and then another in the third on a solo home run by Devin Harrison. Then came the fourth inning flood.

Trey Stine started it with a lead off homer. Eleven batters later the Aztecs had broken the game open with a seven-run inning, although only two were earned.

The T-Birds tried to battle back by scoring five of their own in the sixth inning of the seven inning contest. Mesa had three hits and capitalized on four PCC walks and three wild pitches. But the deficit was too much to overcome.

In game two Pima scored first in the third inning, but MCC responded withe three of its own.with Jordan Zimmerman (So., Mesa, AZ/Red Mountain H.S.) and Brady Bate (Fr., Spanish Fork, Utah/Spanish Fork H.S.) each driving in runs.

The T-Birds extended their lead to 4-1 in the sixth after James Anderson (So., Henderson, Nev/Coronado H.S.) led off with a double, moved to third on a wild pitch and came across on a ground ball by Hunter Robson (Fr., Chandler, AZ/Hamilton H.S.).

However, the Aztecs chipped away with one in the seventh and then took control with a four-run eighth.

Zimmerman and Mitchell Morimoto (Fr., Issaquah, Wash/Issaquah H.S.) each had a pair of hits for MCC.

The T-Birds travel to Gateway Tuesday at 3:00 p.m.
