Six-run eighth leads to baseball's 11-7 win over Arizona Christian JV

MESA, AZ - Breaking loose for six runs in the eighth inning, Mesa scored its second straight come-from-behind victory, taking an 11-7 win over the Arizona Christian University JV Tuesday.

MCC had also won in come-from-behind fashion Saturday, scoring three in the ninth for a victory over Glendale.

Down 7-5 entering the eighth, the T-Birds jumped on reliever Sammy Saenz quickly. Brady Bate (Fr., Spanish Fork, Utah/Spanish Fork H.S.) led off and was hit by a pitch. After one out, pinch hitter James Anderson (So., Henderson, Nev/Coronado H.S.) walked as did Hunter Robson (Fr., Chandler, AZ/hamilton H.S.). Mitchell Morimoto (Fr., Issaquah, Wash/Issaquah H.S.), also pinch hitting, then delivered a two-run single to tie the score. Jacob Boston (Fr., Chandler, AZ/Hamilton H.S.) also pinch hit with a walk and Drew Lawrence (Fr., Anthem, AZ/Boulder Creek H.S.) drove in the go-ahead run, also with a walk. After Casey Moses (So., Las Vegas, Nev/Cimmaron Memorial H.S.) squeezed in another run, Kyle Gibbs (Fr., Phoenix, AZ/Desert Vista H.S.) plated the final run of the inning with a sacrifice fly.

Trailing 1-0, Mesa scored two in the second and three in the third and seemed poised to break the game open.

In the second, Bate led off with his fourth home run of the year and Dallas Riggs (Fr., Phoenix, AZ/Bradshaw Mountain H.S.) scored on a double play after doubling.

Lawrence then delivered a two-run homer in the third as MCC opened up a 5-1 lead.

Bate finished 2-3 with three RBIs. Matt Hart (Fr., Tempe, AZ/Seton Catholic H.S.) was 2-3 and Riggs 2-4 with two driven in.

Mesa will host the Grand Canyon University Club team Wednesday at 3:00 p.m.
