Arizona Western sweep halts baseball winning streak at ten

MESA, AZ - A collision of two teams on winnings streaks kept one alive, but ended Mesa's at ten as Arizona Western swept a doubleheader, 2-0 and 8-3 Tuesday.

The Matadors have now won seven in a row and 11 of their last 12 improving to 24-11 and 13-5 in ACCAC play. With the losses, second-ranked MCC is now 28-7 and 18-6.

Game one was a pitcher's battle all the way and handed Tyler Carvalho (So., Lancaster, Calif/Paraclete H.S.) suffering his first loss since the opening game of last year's NJCAA Division II World Series.

Carvalho went the distance, but wasn't quite as sharp as usual allowing nine hits and two runs, only one of which was earned. He had seven strikeouts and no walks.

AWC put two of the board in the third and made them stand up as Thomas Schroder pitched a four-hit shutout.

Casey Moses (So., North Las Vegas, Nev/Centennial H.S.) was 2-3 for MCC.

The T-Birds grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second inning of game two as Hunter Robson (Fr., Chandler, AZ/Hamilton H.S.) drove in Brady Bate (Fr., Spanish Fork, Utah/Spanish Fork H.S.). Both hand singled.

After the Matadors went ahead, 2-1, with single runs in both the third and fourth, MCC battled back even in the bottom of the fourth when Jordan Zimmerman (So., Mesa, AZ/Red Mountain H.S.) doubled and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Bate.

Western, however, took change with three in the fifth.

Mesa cut the deficit by one in the bottom of the inning when Drew Lawrence (Fr., Anthem, AZ/Boulder Creek H.S.) led off with a single and wound up coming home on a base hit by Alex Gudac (So., West Jordan, Utah/Juan Diego Catholic H.S.).

The Matadors, however added three more in the eighth to break the game open.

Zimmerman and Robson each had two hits.

Mesa has off until Friday when it meets Glendale in ACCAC action at home at 3:00 p.m.
