Baseball takes first from Phoenix, 5-1
PHOENIX, AZ - The Mesa baseball team opened its home-and-home series with Phoenix with a 5-1 victory Tuesday.
Unloading all five of its runs in the sixth inning, MCC backed up a strong pitching performance by Evan Fresquez (So., Las Vegas, Nev/Coronado H.S.) in running its record to 13-3 and 9-2 in ACCAC play.
After allowing an unearned run in the first, Fresquez settled in to toss a five-hitter with ten strikeouts to run his record to 4-0.
Mitchell Morimoto (Fr., Issaquah, Wash/Issaquah H.S.) delivered four hits in the game, the biggest a two-run double in the sixth.
After a single by James Anderson (So., Henderson, Nev/Coronado H.S.) and a walk to Hunter Robson (Fr., Chandler, AZ/Hamilton H.S.) loaded the bases, Drew Lawrence (Fr., Anthem, AZ/Boulder Creek H.S.) cleared them with a triple to account for the rest of the T-Birds' scoring.
Alex Gudac (So., West Jordan, Utah/Juan Diego Catholic H.S.) also had three hits as Mesa pounded out 13.
The two teams meet again in Mesa Wednesday at 3:00 p.m.
