Baseball takes down GateWay, 4-1

  PHOENIX, AZ - Another dominant pitching performance by Tyler Carvalho (So., Lancaster, Calif/Paraclete H.S.) and a timely, two-run, double by Mitchell Morimoto (Fr., Issaquah, Wash/Issaquah H.S.) helped lift Mesa (11-3, 7-2) to a 4-1 win over GateWay (7-5, 4-5) in the first of a two-game series Friday.

  Carvalho hurled nine innings, allowing just one uneraned run while striking out nine and walking none. He raised his record to 4-0 and lowered his ERA to just 0.39. He blanked the Geckos until the seventh, when the uneraned run scored, and recorded six of his strikouts over the last four innings.

  MCC took a 1-0 lead in the thitrd without recording a hit. Drew Lawrence (Fr., Anthem, AZ/Boulder Creek H.S.) and Danny Lutz (So., Phoenix, AZ/Shadow Mountain H.S.) drew successive walks. Jordan Rose (So., Tremonton, Utah/Bear River H.S.) was hit by a pitch and with one out Alex Gudac (So., West Jordan, Utah/Juan Diego Catholic H.S.) was also hit, driving in a run.

  A two-run fifth made the difference. Morimoto drove home Rose, who had reached on an error, and Brady Bate (Fr., Spanish Fork, Utah/Spanish Fork H.S.) who had walked.

  The T-Birds added an insurance run in the eioghth. Morimoto was hit by a pitch and eventually scored on a sacrifice bunt by Lawrence.

  Jacob Boston (Fr., Chandler, AZ/Hamilton H.S.) had a pair of hits for MCC.

  The two teams switch sites Saturday, meeting at noon at Mesa.
