GLENDALE, AZ - The defending national champion Mesa baseball team opened ACCAC play with a 6-1 win at Glendale Friday afternoon.
The T-Birds got two in the first and then rode the pitching of Tyler Carvalho (So., Lansacter, Calif/Paraclete H.S.) until adding three more in the sixth to take command. Carvalho allowed six hits and struck out five, with no walks, in improving his record to 2-0.
MCC got an RBI single from Alez Gudac (So., West Jordan, Utah/Juan Diego Catholic H.S.) and a sacrifice fly from Jacob Boston (Fr., Chandler, AZ/Hamilton H.S.) to plate its first two runs and Boston added a two-run single in the sixth to give him three RBIs.
Josh Murtha (So., Las Vegas, Nev/Faith Lutheran H.S.) gave Mesa three and two-thirds scoreless relief.
Mesa hosts Glendale Saturday at noon.
