Prieto and Cabral each with 3 RBIs as Aztecs softball splits with Mesa CC

The Pima Community College softball team (9-3, 2-2 in ACCAC) shut out Mesa Community College (7-1, 5-1) but fell in the second game on Tuesday at the West Campus Softball field.

The Aztecs got great production once again from freshman pitcher Paige Adair and had some key at-bats from sophomore Edith Prieto (Sunnyside HS) and freshman Mya Cabral (Pueblo HS).

Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 8, (13) Mesa CC Thunderbirds 0 (5 innings): The Aztecs shut out the Thunderbirds to hand them their first loss of the season.

Adair pitched a complete-game shutout giving up two hits with eight strikeouts as she improved to 8-0 on the mound.

Prieto hit three doubles in the game as she put the Aztecs on the board with an RBI double in the 1st inning. She followed with her second RBI double as part of a four-run 2nd inning. She helped clinch the mercy-rule victory with an RBI double in the 5th as she finished 4 for 4 with three RBIs, two runs scored and three doubles.

Sophomore Sierra Gentry finished 2 for 2 with an RBI and a run scored while freshman Alyse Casper was 1 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Game 2: (13) Mesa CC Thunderbirds 7, Pima CC Aztecs 3: The Thunderbirds took control of the game with a run in the 1st inning and five in the 2nd.

The Aztecs rallied in the 5th inning as they loaded the bases. Cabral hit a bases clearing three-run RBI double to cut the lead in half. The Thunderbirds tacked on a run in the 7th inning.

Cabral finished 2 for 4 with three RBIs and a double. Gentry was 2 for 3 with a double while sophomore Megan Flores (Salpointe Catholic HS) went 2 for 4.

Casper took the loss (1-3) as she pitched one and one-third innings giving up six runs (five earned) on five hits with two walks. Adair pitched in relief and threw five and two-thirds giving up one run (one earned) on two hits with five strikeouts.

The Aztecs will play five straight ACCAC conference doubleheaders on the road. They will face off with Yavapai College in Prescott on Saturday starting at 1:00 p.m.
