SMCC Women's Volleyball Sweeps Phoenix College, Mesa CC

The South Mountain Community College women's volleyball team (12-14, 7-7 ACCAC) swept Phoenix College 3-0 on Oct. 18 and swept Mesa CC 3-0 on Oct. 20 in a pair of ACCAC matches last week. Sophomore Lexi Wasil led SMCC with 11 kills in the win over the Bears, while sophomore Rylee Pitts posted a team-high 13 kills as the Cougars swept the Thunderbirds. 

Phoenix College Recap

The Cougars won in straight sets over the Bears in a vital road victory: 25-17, 25-16, and 25-18. SMCC finished with 30 kills on 96 attacks to post a .188 hitting percentage. The Cougars added 26 assists, seven service aces, 62 digs, and nine solo blocks. 

Wasil hit .194 with 11 kills in 36 attacks and added five digs, two service aces, and a solo block. Sophomore Hayden Rosales was second on the squad with eight kills, hitting .250 in 20 swings with nine digs and a service ace. 

Freshman Rylea Simonich posted seven kills, six solo blocks, and four digs in the victory. Sophomore Delicea McAuley recorded a double-double with 26 assists and 12 digs and added a service ace and a solo block. 

Freshman Mikelle McAfee led the Cougars with 14 digs and added a service ace, while sophomores Brynley Lynch and Mariah Smith recorded a pair of kills. Sophomore Shayna Simmers had six digs, freshman Hope Williamson added seven, and freshman Ayanna Rae LeBlanc had a dig, a solo block and a block assist. 

Mesa CC Recap

The Cougars defeated the Thunderbirds 3-0 in a pivotal conference match that moved SMCC into a tie for third in the league's Division II standings: 25-21, 25-17, and 25-19. 

SMCC hit .202 with 40 kills and 18 errors in 109 attacks over the three sets. The Cougars added 37 assists, seven service aces, 75 digs, five solo blocks and seven total blocks.  

Pitts led all players with 13 kills and hit .250 in 32 swings. She recorded a double-double by finishing with 12 digs and added two service aces, two solo blocks, and two block assists. 

Simonich was second on SMCC with 10 kills and hit .500 in 20 attacks, and added three solo blocks and a dig. Wasil was third on the team with nine kills, and Smith added four kills, two digs, and two block assists. 

McAuley led SMCC with 37 assists and added 11 digs for her second double-double of the week. Rosales posted 13 digs and three service aces, and McAfee led the Cougars with 27 digs. Williamson finished with three kills and seven digs.
