Lady Matadors storm back to beat Thunderbirds, 58-57

YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Lady Matadors Women's Basketball team (14-6, 7-6) overcame a 14-point deficit to come back and beat Mesa (16-6, 10-4), 58-57 on Wednesday evening in Mesa, Ariz. at the Theo Heap Gymnasium.

Kristol Ayson led the Lady Matadors with 18 points, hitting four three-pointers to help the Lady Matadors win their second consecutive game.

The Lady Matadors got off to a slow start, falling behind by 14 points at one point in the first quarter and trailed by 12, 21-9 after the first 10 minutes of play. Arizona Western outscored Mesa 18-10 in the second quarter, pulling to within four points at 31-27 after a pair of free throws from Gretta Carollo at the end of the quarter.

Mesa opened the second half with a 12-0 run to push the lead back up to 10 at 43-29 early in the third quarter before Kristol Ayson snapped the run with a three-pointer. Evie Curtis cut the Mesa lead to 45-38 with a layup late in the third quarter.

Curtis finished as the Lady Matadors' second-leading scorer, scoring a season-high eight points, six of which came in the fourth quarter.

The Lady Matadors trailed 47-39 entering the fourth quarter and would cut the deficit to 53-48 before Carollo hit a three-pointer and Maddison Zugna tied the game with a layup. Rosa Revuletas hit three free throws to give the Lady Matadors the comeback win, outscoring the Thunderbirds 19-10.

Carollo, Zugna, and Chenai Mushore each finished the game with seven points while Revueltas ended the game with five points.

The Lady Matadors hit the road on Saturday, February 4, when they head to South Mountain to battle the Cougars at 4:00 pm.
