Cougar Baseball Splits ACCAC Series with Mesa CC

The South Mountain Community College baseball team (16-17, 8-10 ACCAC) split an ACCAC two-game series with Mesa CC, falling 4-3 at MCC on Mar. 19 before winning 5-3 on Mar. 20 at home. Sophomore Dominic Chacon hit his team-leading home run in the first game, but the Thunderbirds rallied in the bottom of the ninth to post the win. In the second game, sophomore Jaden Miranda hit a two-out, two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth to help the Cougars earn a series split. 

Mar. 19 Recap

The Cougars led 3-1 after five innings and 3-2 heading into the bottom of the ninth. However, the Thunderbirds posted the walk-off win courtesy of a two-out, two-run double. 

Chacon blasted his team-leading fourth home run of the season and added an RBI single in the fifth. Freshman Joe Terranova also had two hits, including a double, and sophomore Karsen Waslefsky had an RBI single in the first. 

Freshman Christopher Mata had a single, run, and stolen base, and Miranda and Chacon also had stolen bases. 

Sophomore Matthew Lighthall started for SMCC and 5.2 innings with three hits, two strikeouts, and one earned run. Sophomore Kaden Gray tossed 1.1 innings of relief, and Luis Martin Romero (1-5) took the loss with an inning of work. 

Mar. 20 Recap

Miranda broke a 3-3 tie with a two-run blast over the fence in left field to help the Cougars salve the series. Freshman Raul Parada scored on the play after he doubled with two down. He added an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth and finished 3 for 4 with three RBIs. 

Chacon and freshman Brady Lord had two hits apiece in the victory. Chacon doubled and scored a run while Lord posted a stolen base. 

Terranova singled and scored, Waslefsky had an RBI single, and sophomore Wylie Waters scored a run. 

Sophomore Nikolas Miller earned the win in relief, and sophomore Alex Urias-Calvillo recorded the save with a quiet ninth inning. Sophomore Fabian Ibarra started the game for SMCC and faced the minimum in three innings with one strikeout. Sophomore Brandon Koble and Mata also pitched in relief for the Cougars.
