Hoerger's big day helps Arizona Western Baseball to sweep of Thunderbirds

YUMA, Ariz. – The No. 15 ranked Arizona Western Matadors Baseball team (29-7, 16-6 ) extended its winning streak to four games with a doubleheader sweep of Mesa (22-14, 10-12) on Tuesday afternoon in Mesa, Ariz., scoring three unanswered runs to win game one 3-1 before taking care of the Thunderbirds 8-4 in game two.

Matadors' starting pitcher Carlos Uribe allowed one run in seven innings of work, earning the complete game win as the Matadors scored three unanswered runs to come from behind and take the opener, 3-1.

After Mesa took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a wild pitch, the Matadors tied the game in the fourth when Bronson Neave singled in a run to put the Matadors on the board. Taehyung Kim gave the Matadors the lead later in the inning doubling in a run to give the Matadors the 2-1 advantage.

Arizona Western added a run in the seventh inning on an Eli Watson sacrifice fly as Uribe worked around a base runner in the bottom of the inning to secure the win.

Neave went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles and drove in a run in the win while Kim doubled and walked.

Luca Hoerger hit a grand slam, going 3-for-4 with five runs batted in while Nathan Houston picked up a pair of hits in an 8-4 game-two win over the Thunderbirds.

The Matadors opened the scoring in the second inning when Fausto Sanchez blasted his third home run of the season and his second in as many games to give the Matadors a 1-0 lead. Luca Hoerger stretched the lead out to 5-0 two innings later with a grand slam.

Arizona Western added its sixth run of the game in the fifth inning when Jahzeel Groetalaers worked a bases-loaded walk.

Mesa cut the Matadors' lead in half with three runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning before Sergio DeCello smashed an RBI double in the sixth inning followed by a Hoerger RBI single to extend the lead to 8-3.  

Mesa added a run in the eighth inning before Brady Nelson came into the game and was able to finish off the Thunderbirds to secure the win.

The Matadors return home to host Glendale in an ACCAC doubleheader on Saturday, March 30, beginning at Noon at Walt Kammann Baseball Field.
