SMCC Baseball Sweeps Midweek Series with Mesa CC

The South Mountain Community College baseball team (25-9, 11-7 ACCAC) defeated Mesa CC 4-1 on Mar. 23 and 13-2 (7 innings) on Mar. 24 in a pair of ACCAC contests. The Cougars got outstanding pitching from Raul Garayzar and Matthew Martinez to post the 4-1 victory in the game one win. In game two, sophomore Core Jackson went 4-for-4 with six RBIs and missed the cycle by a triple en route to the 13-2 win. 

Game One (Mar. 22) Recap

SMCC scored two runs in the second and added two insurance runs in the ninth to pull out the 4-1 road victory. 

Sophomore Raul Garayzar improved to 4-1 on the season with seven innings of work. He fanned four Thunderbirds and scattered five hits. Sophomore Matthew Martinez recorded his third save of the season with two innings and three strikeouts. 

Sophomore Jared Glinski led the Cougars with two hits and scored a run. Freshmen Dominic Chacon and Jaden Miranda recorded doubles, with Chacon scoring twice. Freshman Karsen Waslefsky had two sacrifice flies, and sophomore Brian Leon scored the team's fourth run. 

Game Two (Mar. 23) Recap

The Cougars struck for multiple runs in the first four innings, including four in the first and five in the fourth, to power to the home victory. 

Jackson hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning, and his six RBIs were a season high. He is batting .301 with three home runs, 15 RBIs and 28 runs in 29 games this year. 

Glinski hit a two-run home run in the first inning, and freshman Sam Christiansen went 1-for-3 with four runs and three walks. Waslefsky was 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI, and Chacon posted a two-run single, two walks and a run scored. 

Miranda, Connor Schneider and Landen Argabright had doubles for SMCC in the win, and Argabright added a sac fly. 

On the mound, freshman Nikolas Miller tossed five innings in relief to earn the win and improve to 3-1 on the season. He fanned eight, walked one and allowed one unearned run. Sophomore Jackson Thomas started the game and went two innings with a strikeout.
