Mike Mills

Mike Mills played football for Allen Benedict at Tempe High School. When he arrived at MCC, the College had an enrollment of 4,000 day students and 2,500 night students. The Fall of 1969 saw the dedication of the John D. Riggs Stadium and completion of a number of new buildings on campus, including the Gymnasium.

1969 was Edgar "Mutt" Ford's final year as head coach, and poor health limited his involvement with the team that won only four of nine games during the season. Paul Widmer, who had been an assistant under Ford, took over and guided the team to a 10-1 record the next year. The only loss was to Fort Scott, Kansas in the post-season national championship game.

Mike co-captained the team with Jimmy Smith and made All-Conference, NJCAA All-American as an offensive tackle, and Academic All-American. Coach Widmer remembers him as an outstanding leader who led by example. "He was a great drive blocker, very bright and a tough competitor," the Coach recalled.

Mike went to the University of Tulsa on a football scholarship where he captained the Golden Hurricanes. Since graduating, he has worked in sales for Sears and Ford Motor Company and had his own sporting goods store. He is active in youth sports and the University of Tulsa Alumni Association.
