Lynn Bedford

Lynn Bedford built a dynasty with the Mesa Community College Volleyball program.  Coaching for six years from 1976-1981, Bedford compiled a record of 200 wins and only 43 losses.  In that time, he captured six consecutive Conference and Regional Championships, had nine All-Americans, 17 All-Region, and 21 All-Conference players.  Most notably, Coach Bedford and his team captured the first-ever Women’s National Championship in Mesa Community College history with their 1977 National Title.

Coach Bedford’s modesty was always evident as he often said he was lucky he was getting good players.  One of his former players, Pam Pierce said Bedford had a remarkable way of fostering togetherness on his teams.  That togetherness is evident in the halls outside the Theo Heap Gymnasium, where many of Coach Bedford’s team trophies rest.

“Anyone that ever played for him - loved him.  I consider him one of the best people I know in the entire world.  Our families have been friends for a long time.” – Theo Heap

Lynn’s family is well-represented here tonight to honor the coaching legacy.  However, Lynn was not simply a coach.  His caring and nurturing demeanor left lasting impressions on the student-athletes that played under him.  They would all be proud to know that he is being honored in the MCC Sports Hall of Fame.  Lynn, Jr. and David, his sons, Nancy, and Leslie, his daughters, as well as in-laws and grandchildren are all in attendance tonight to represent one of Mesa’s finest coaches of all time.  We are truly honored to induct Coach Lynn Bedford in the Mesa Community College Sports Hall of Fame.
