Ed Weatherspoon

Ed Weatherspoon

Ed Weatherspoon was "Mr. Everything" when he was at Mesa Community College. Coming from Globe where he was an All-State athlete, "Spoon" was Mesa's first All-American basketball player and was similarly honored as a sprinter and member of the relay team in Track. He also played baseball on Jim Brock's national championship teams. Ed was the leading scorer on the basketball team for two years, led the team to its first ACCAC championship in 1971, and set school records at the time in field goals and points scored.

What Coach Ed Van Winkle remembered about "Spoon" was that he played both ends of the floor and was as good defensively as he was as an offensive thrower.

He next moved to the University of Arizona where he played basketball and baseball. The Phoenix Suns had interest in signing him, but on his brother's advice, he went to a Washington Redskins football tryout and was signed a punt returner. Played for New Orleans Saints and in the USFL.

Following his playing days, Ed has been a professional model and actor, had his own janitorial service company, and currently is in sales with a residential home builder in Houston, Texas.
